The wreck happened in Jericho, in the eastbound lanes between exits 39 and 41, just after 3 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5.
Nassau County Police said a Chevy Suburban was heading eastbound when the driver lost control and overturned. The Suburban struck the back of a Dodge delivery van that was pulled over on the shoulder.
A tractor-trailer then struck the Suburban, which had come to a stop in the right lane.
The driver of the Suburban, identified as 49-year-old Kenneth Young, of Brooklyn, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
A 55-year-old man operating the delivery van and a 43-year-old male driver of the tractor-trailer were not injured.
The crash shut down the eastbound lanes for several hours, snarling traffic during the morning commute. The lanes had reopened by 10:30 a.m.
Slippery road conditions from an overnight winter storm, which brought snowfall to parts of the region, may have contributed to the incident.
